Cultural Sensitivity & Domestic Abuse - 3 CEUs
This course offers students the chance to study the work of experienced social workers practicing with domestic violence cases. As graduate and undergraduate social work educators, we (the editors) have struggled to find quality practice materials that translate well into a classroom setting. Over the years, we have used case materials from our practice careers, professionally produced audiovisuals, and tried other casebooks. While each had its advantages, we could not find a vehicle that allowed students to study the work of experienced practitioners that took students beyond the belief that practice is a technical endeavor that involves finding “correct” interventions to solve client problems. We want our students to study and analyze how experienced practitioners think about practice and how they struggle to resolve ethical dilemmas and make treatment decisions that meet the needs of their clientele. We want students to review and challenge the work of others in a way that allows them to understand what comprises important practice decisions with real clients in real practice settings. That is, we want classroom materials that allow students entry into the minds of experienced practitioners.

Most of us have seen movies about domestic violence, or watched an episode of our favorite television drama that dealt with the issue, or seen it discussed on talk shows, in general interest magazines, or in the daily news. Domestic violence is not one of those extremely rare family horrors (such as a grandfather who sleeps with his grandson’s girlfriend and the grandson wants to beat on him) this is blown all out of proportion by the selective programming of shock-addicted talk show producers. Case histories are provided highlighting common aspects of elder mistreatment: a combination of physical and financial abuse and medical neglect. Findings from the several phases of research are described. The first phase consisted mainly of exploratory studies that confirmed that existence of elder mistreatment. The second phase focuses interests to characteristics of abusers, with abuser dependency, not elder dependency, surfacing as a significant contributor to elder mistreatment.
